We are witnessing the digital transformation of entire societies. The internet, if used wisely, enables decentralization, openness, fair competition, and non-discrimination. Thus, today we need digital solutions more than ever.

At the end of April, Dr. Thomas Zielke had the opportunity to participate in an online event of the EU project “Promotion and Development of the Open Internet in Africa”, together with the Government of Rwanda. The European Union hosted this meeting. Rwanda is a pioneer of digital transformation in Africa: It is one of the best-connected countries on the continent – around 74% of internet users use mobile connections.

In his remarks, he pointed out that digital transformation requires cross-border and cross-sectoral cooperation. Open internet is a condition for a rapid and meaningful response to the challenges we are facing in our globalized world. However, everything that is illegal offline should also be illegal online – as stated in the EU Digital Service Act. Interoperability and the freedom of choice together with standards which are accepted everywhere provide the foundation for peace and prosperity.

Stay tuned: Dr. Thomas Zielke is going to attend the World Telecommunications Development Conference 2022 in Kigali in June to continue this discussion.
