An open internet is built on stable standards that accommodate innovation and actively work towards closing the digital gap. How can this be achieved? That is what Dr. Thomas Zielke discussed as a panelist and keynote speaker at the European Union side event “The EU Digital Global Gateway: An Internet Open to all” on Wednesday, 8 June. The event took place in the digital transformation center in Kigali.

Dr. Zielke had the chance to listen to Peter Marien, Teamleader Digital Governance at the European Commission as well as Wim Degezelle, Technical Expert of the EU-funded project for the promotion of the open internet. They gave interesting and important insights in their work and thought-provoking ideas regarding open internet. The interesting discussion was kindly moderated by Fiona Mbabazi.

During Dr. Zielke’s key remarks, he highlighted global challenges such as the question of digital sovereignty. They are very complex and need to be solved together – including developing countries.
The need for digital transformation to achieve the SDGs and a green transition is becoming increasingly clear. Without a widespread, affordable and open internet, the digital transformation will deepen existing gaps and inequalities. This should be prevented. As candidate for Director Standardization, Dr. Zielke is looking forward to working towards a fair and just digital transformation together with ITU.

Building bridges – with ITU and beyond.
