On 30 November 2020, the European Commission hosted the 2nd MASS Summit (2nd International Ship Autonomy and Sustainability Summit - Safe-Smart-Sustainable) as a video conference to discuss the question: "What is the real future of autonomous shipping?"

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim gave a brief presentation on the IMO's perspective and EU Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean on the Commission's perspective on chances and challenges of autonomous shipping.

The Ministry highlighted the relevance of the five fields of action of the Passau Declaration for autonomous shipping and also underlined the need for cooperation within the European Union:

  1. Place people at the center stage of the process
  2. Expand the digital infrastructure and make mobility infrastructure smart
  3. Promote automation
  4. Strengthen smart connectivity
  5. Promote innovations for digital and virtual mobility.
