Data is the raw material for the future of mobility, but a lot of data generated in the mobility sector remains unused due to a lack of utilization concepts or access to relevant data for innovators. Another reason is an uncertainty regarding the secure and trustworthy exchange of data. It quickly becomes clear that the wide range of digital services and apps not only need interfaces, but in particular require deep integration of services and an overarching exchange of data.

The Mobility Data Space (MDS) is the fair data sharing community for everyone who wants to help shape tomorrow's mobility in a more environmentally friendly, safer and user-friendly way. It connects those who offer mobility data with those who need it to develop new business models, fostering cross-sector data-based collaboration between transportation companies, the automotive industry, mobility service providers and municipalities. Based on interoperable technology, it creates a decentralized data platform that provides a secure ecosystem - simple, transparent and with full value creation for both sides. The Mobility Data Space offers users many advantages.

In terms of transparency, data protection standards, decentralization and self-determination rights, the MDS differs significantly from existing data marketplaces: The Mobility Data Space promotes the exchange of data which doesn’t necessarily have to be made available to the public, but which involves an economic and transport policy interest. Its specific architecture also contributes to the digital sovereignty of Germany and Europe. In the current coalition agreement as well as in the federal government's digital strategy, the Mobility Data Space is mentioned by name as an essential building block of digitalisation in Germany. Success through collaboration at eye level.

At the heart of the Mobility Data Space is the data catalog, which lists a wide range of data provided by participants. Mobility data providers post information about their data in the catalog, where it can then be found by mobility data seekers. The data itself remains with the providers until a contract has been concluded with a buyer.

The Mobility Data Space is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) and is part of the European Gaia-X cloud initiative. At the end of 2023, it will be linked to the Mobilithek, the platform for exchanging digital information, primarily from the public sector. The sponsoring company of the Mobility Data Space is the non-profit organization DRM Datenraum Mobilität GmbH, which emerged from a project of acatech - German Academy of Science and Engineering.
